Maine Allows Slot Machine Proposal on BallotMaine officials have decided to allow a proposal that would let voters decide on a slot machine facility in Oxford County. Those that support the slot machine casino had gathered more than 59,000 signatures – more than needed to get the issue on the ballot. Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap issued the ruling after seeing the petitions. The Legislature can now enact the initiative as it stands or they can send it to the voters. Those that support the slot machine initiative say that they can only hope that others will see it the way they do. They see the machines as hope for a better future – one that will bring “economic recovery” to the state. If the voters agree to allow the slot machines to come in, then the municipality where the casino would be located would then have to approve the project itself. The casino would have slot machines, table games, card games, etc. – the things one normally sees in a smaller casino. It would also limit the number of slot machines allowed at this facility as well as any of the race tracks to 1,500 each. They are also trying to lower the age of gambling from 21 to 19 – which has brought forth a lot of outrage. Many can get behind the idea of slot machines, but think that the age must stay at 21.
