Laurel Racing Fails

A judge has ruled that the Laurel Racing Association will not be allowed to have their bid reconsidered, and that they should have followed the rules when they made their initial bid. The state commission rejected their slot machine bid because they did not follow the same rules as the other companies who did, and they were fighting the decision.

Laurel Racing had argued that they should not have to put up the required licensing fee of $3 million per 500 slot machines that they were requesting. They would have had to pay the state $28.5 million for their deal, and they said that they did not put the money up front because they felt that if they did not get the deal they would not get that money back.

They said that they wanted the slot machines but were not willing to give away free money, which is understood. However, the state said that they would refund the money if they did not get it. They said that although the racing association seemed to be changing their tune now, and saying that it had to do with refunding the money – they say that they initially said that they were not doing it because of market conditions.

They said that if they wanted the slot machines they would have put up the money, and followed the rules. The racing association said that they wanted the slot machine license but that it was unconstitutional for the state to ask for it up front.
