Absolutely Not!
In an
attempt to get more slot machine revenues in the state, Mickey
Roemer of Roemer Gaming came up with what was surely a fool
proof plan. The idea was that when you go to a convenience store
and you get change, you would have the option of getting your
cash or getting a credit for that cash in the slot machine.
Roemer said it was a case of “low risk and high reward” but the
Nevada Gaming Commission saw it a little differently. They
felt that it would not be conducive to those that
have a slot machine gambling problem to be tempted that
way. They also felt that this would give much more access to
children – something that is strictly against the law. The law
says that children can not be near slot machines and those slot
machines that are in grocery stores, etc. have to be kept in a
separate alcove where children cannot get near them.
They
felt that it was a bad idea overall. Commissioner Chairman Peter
Bernhard said that they were all sure that it could be done and
that it would raise a lot more slot machine revenue for the
state. However, they felt that it should not be done for moral
reasons. The Gaming Control Board wanted the commission to take
a look at the plan before they allowed the developer to create
the machine – but now that will not be necessary as it was
vetoed.
The two that voted for the new slot machine concept said that they were not approving it; they simply wanted to see more of the concept. They reserved the right to change their vote upon further investigation.
