Crowds are Down, Slot Machines Needed

It has become commonplace for the race tracks in New Jersey to ask for slot machines. Every year they ask the state to approve their bringing in slot machines, and every year they are denied them. The casinos put up a pretty good fight against them as they know that if the race tracks bring in slot machines that is less money that will end up in their coffers. They argue that they pay the race tracks a large enough stipend to keep them from needing them.

But the tracks disagree. They say that the number of race tracks that own slot machines already are making it impossible for them to exist. They argue that when they have a choice to go to a race track that has slot machines as opposed to one that doesn’t, their players are choosing to follow the machines. They say that their crowds are much smaller than they used to be, and a lot of that has to do with the slot machine competition.

Their problem is that the number of tracks that offer slot machines is amazing. They can bring in the bigger amounts of money which means larger purses for the tracks – and so they are able to bring in the big name horses. They cannot do that if they do not have the backing to compete with the larger purses. They think that they are barely able to keep the people coming in now, because they have somewhere else to be.

Well, their legislators are starting to agree. They say that they understand the desire for slot machines. They listened to the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority Officials at an extended hearing, and many say that this could be the year that the tracks get their slot machines. It appears that they are making their case much clearer than it used to be, and they know that the casinos are down in their numbers so they will not be able to support them for much longer.
