Governor Considering
Slots
Illinois
Governor Pat Quinn is “taking a look” at the option of bringing
slot machines to the tracks in the state. Fairmount Park
Racetrack has recently started their new season and they have
been arguing that it was important to them that they get
approved for slot machines because without them there was a real
likelihood that they would not be able to survive. They know
that if they close that it would greatly affect the state, and
leave them with a gap not just in revenue for the state, but
also a gap in the jobs that would be lost by them having to
leave.
When
asked, Quinn said that he did not think that slot machines would
necessarily be a bad idea. He said that the track had come up
with a proposal and that he was going to “take a look at it” to
see the merits of the plan. He said that he is not willing to
absolutely say no to the idea, and that there could be real
possibilities in it.
But for
those that say that the governor is trying to save the race
track, there are those that know that there are some ulterior
motives going on here. They say that the state is looking to
bring in more revenue as they have seen how the new video poker
law being passed was not that big of a financial boon for the
state as they thought it would be. They thought that there was a
bigger deal going on and that the state is simply looking to
save face and this is one way of doing that.
