Maywood Might Be
Going
It looks
as though there are even worse times ahead for
Maywood
Park. The track has
announced that without the slot machines that they are going to
be in real trouble and will most likely have to close by June of
this year. This comes as a surprise to some that thought that
the track would be able to hold on longer than that, but others
understand that without the additional revenue that slot
machines would bring them, it would be impossible for them to
stay open.
The
track has been fighting to get slot machines brought in for some
time now, and Illinois lawmakers are
going to have a mess on their heads. If the park closes they are
now looking at a lot more people unemployed – not just from this
track. The closing of the track will also affect the
thoroughbred industry and possibly be the beginning of the end
for the horse racing industry in the state.
The
track is not the only one in the state that says that they are
having financial difficulties. With so many other tracks in
other states able to offer slot machines they do not have the
ability to compete against them. They need the state to help
them by legalizing the slot machines at their tracks and
allowing them to offer larger purses to their patrons.
Otherwise, the closing of Maywood
will simply be the beginning of the end for the Illinois horse racing industry, and no one
wants to see that happen.
