New York Needs Revenue

The Seneca Nation of Indians is not backing down when it comes to their issues within the state of New York. They signed a slot machine compact with the state that gave them exclusive rights to certain areas of the state to offer their slot machines, and no one else could encroach on that. In return, the tribe paid millions of dollars to the state in slot machine revenues. However, the nation then says that they discovered another tribe running slot machines on their turf. They asked the state to remove those slot machines, only the state refused. They said that they tried on numerous occasions to talk to the governor, to try and work it out, and each time they were shut down.

So finally, they decided to take matters into their own hands, and in an attempt to get the attention of the state and show them that they were serious, they stopped paying their slot machine revenues to those locations that were affected by the other games that were being run by the other tribe. Needless to say, it worked. The state then said that they had to pay, the tribe refused, and that is where they are.

However, while the state and the tribe have been fighting, the tribe has not paid almost a quarter of a billion dollars in slot machine revenues. Those areas that are no longer getting their payments are finding themselves in a tough spot. They are having to cut their budgets and lay people off – which is not a good place to be in this economy. People are split as to who’s fault it is – but in the interim, it is the people of the state that are suffering.
