Worcester Wants Slots

The House and the Senate have both now had hearings on the bills that would allow Worcester to bring in slot machines. The bills are designed to specifically allow fraternal lodges to offer slot machines to their guests – much like the rest of the Eastern Shore has already been allowed to do. They said that at the hearings the testimony came from the different American Legions that tried to point out why it was so important that they have slot machines.

Many people don’t realize that the Legions need the additional income in order to keep doing the good that they do. The bills would allow them to bring in a max of five slot machines each, and they would pay a fee of $50 per slot machine to the county. The money would be split in half between the charities and the American Legions. They could keep half of it for their administrative costs, and the other half would be donated to various charities. This is not a problem for them as they currently give what they don’t need for running the place to charity already.

With the other counties using slot machines already, they have been having a harder time keeping their doors open. They say that those that might have come to see them often go to a location that has the slot machines as the games are more fun. This will level the playing field for them and give them an opportunity to bring in more money at the same time than they would have if the slot machines had never been introduced.
