Texas Amusement Games Walk a Fine Line

They call them amusement games, but many consider them to be the same as slot machines – which makes them illegal in the state of Texas. Texans that want to gamble on the slot machines must go over state line to do so, and there are always plenty of busses waiting for the chance to make that happen for them.

However, Texas does allow amusement games, but they must be registered with the state for a fee of $60 per machine. But lawmakers want to shut down the machines because they say that they are too close to slot machines to be legal, but they also want to tax them to pay for indigent health care, lower property taxes, and fund public schooling.

Those that play the machines think the government should keep their noses out of it. They say that there is no reason why they shouldn’t be able to play the games, but if they want to tax them then go ahead, but don’t get rid of them. They work like video games, but look like slot machines, and therein lies the rub.

They are known as 8 liners, because there are eight possible lines – three vertical and horizontal, and two diagonal – and you can win depending on how they line up, just like a slot machine. Players wait to see if their cherries and numbers will line up, and if they do they have won.
