Slot Machines Approved in CALawmakers have approved a 22,500 slot machine increase to the tribes in the state of California. The Senate has said yes to the five Southern California tribes who want to add an almost 40% increase in slot machines to the state, which will be on top of the 10,000 they are allowed already. If everyone brings in the number of slot machines that they can, the state will be looking at more than 70,000 slot machines at 57 casinos. However, just because the Senate approved it, does not mean it will be law. The compacts still have to be approved by the Assembly, where many of the members are Democrats who feel strongly that the compacts are unfair to labor unions. The Assembly wants the tribes to make it easier for their employees to join the unions, but the Senate says that they don’t think that this is an issue. The compacts were negotiated by Governor Schwarzenegger last year during his re-election, and many felt it was just a ploy by the governor to hold onto his job. If all of the slot machines come in, estimates have the income to the government around $500 million a year from the machines. The compacts would last until 2030 when they would be renegotiated again. The compacts would also allow the Yurok Indians, the state’s poorest tribe, to build a 99 slot machine casino on their reservation as well.
