Charleston Council and Table Games

The question facing many Charleston City Council members today is whether or not to endorse table games at the county’s racetracks. They are concerned about trying to keep out of the fray, but the same time they must take some sort of stand on the issue. They are not sure which will be better for the county or for their political careers.

Candidates know that depending on how they weigh in on the issue they will either gain or lose voters, and therefore they have to make their decision carefully. The beginning of next month, voters will head to the polls to decide whether or not table games are a good idea in their county, for if the measure passes, income has been estimated at $700,000 for the city of Charleston over the next few years.

Candidates don’t want to get involved in the dispute, because many people do not want to see expanded gambling in the state, yet it will bring in significant revenue for the county. Many feel that the slot machines are already bringing in enough revenue for them, but when you look at the budget and the programs that aren’t getting funded it is obvious that they do need the money.

One candidate, Democrat Patrick Jones, said that he is not going to take a stand on the table games. He said that he will not advise voters one way or the other because he says that it is their right to make up their minds. He also says that it is their money, and he isn’t going to be the one who tells them what to do with it. Jones is currently on his second term on the council, and will defend his seat against Republican John Johnson.
