Early Voting Begins

Jefferson County Courthouse is allowing early voting for residents who wish to make their opinions known early. The election is to decide whether or not to allow table games into the Charles Town Races & Slots, which currently has live horse racing and almost 5,000 slot machines.

West Virginia legislature decided that the four individual counties that had racetracks already could vote to see if they could add table games to their existing slot machines. Each of the four counties has scheduled their voting for dates this summer.

Almost 150 people were first on line to vote for or against the table games, even with the wind and rain – they wanted to get their vote in. There were regular residents as well as racetrack employees there to get their vote in, and the county wanted to remind people that when they come to vote they can not have any sort of propaganda on their shirts when they step inside the polls.

Those that are wearing Tshirts with slogans, or carrying signs, or name tags that have the racetrack name on them will have to be removed or covered up, or they will not be allowed in to vote. They say it is called “electioneering” and it is illegal.

All registered voters are eligible to participate in early voting, or if they prefer, they can wait for the official special Election Day on June 9^th. Early voting will continue until June 6^th, although it will be closed for Memorial Day. If the vote ends up being for the addition of table games, West Virginia will only be the second state to allow racing, slot machines, and table games at the same location – the other state is Iowa.
