Torrico Fighting Slot Machines

Assemblyman Alberto Torrico is ready to take on the tribes and their slot machines. Now that the Senate has approved their requests for more slot machines and casinos, the compacts have be approved by the Assembly, and many don’t think that is likely to happen.

Torrico is the Chairman of the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee, and he says that the compacts have too many problems to be passed at this time. He says that one of the biggest problems is the lack of checks and balances with the slot machines. He says that since there are no auditing requirements for the tribes how will they know how much they are actually bringing in from their slot machines.

He says that the compacts must be rewritten to include auditing procedures, and that independent accountants need to be brought in. He also wants to see a committee vote on the compacts and says that they may hold up the slot machines until the budget is debated in June. He says he knows the governor wants these “fast tracked” but he says they will happen in the “ordinary course of business.”

The Agua Caliente Tribe of Cahuilla Indians has said that they needed to convince the Assembly that the slot machines and the casinos are the best thing for everyone. They say that they have to get people to understand the ins and outs of the compacts and how they benefit everyone. They say that they will now make it their mission to convince and educate the public and the Assembly that approval of the slot machines is beneficial to all – not just to the tribes.
