Governor Allows State-Run Casinos

In what can only be seen as a historic move, for the first time, state-run casinos have been approved in Kansas. Governor Kathleen Sebelius has decided to move forward with the gambling expansion, and wants it to take effect quickly – as she does not want opponents to bog it down in the courts. She may have to wait for that wish, as opponents are already scrambling to file appeals and injunctions against the expansion.

Opponents say that the amendment that allows for state owned lottery does not in any way infer that state owned casinos are the same thing. They say that they will fight this in the courts, because this is a bastardization of what the voters meant when they approved it in the first place. They say that there is no way that a court of law can find a way to make the connection that the governor obviously has.

The governor says that this is a great way to keep Kansas money in Kansas, instead of having to raise taxes to pay for things. For 15 years, gambling supporters have been trying to get gambling expanded in the state, but until now have been unsuccessful. The bill is not completed yet, as there are a few flaws that have to be worked out, but for the most part they have been.

They say that the amount of money that the casinos could bring in to the state could conceivably be around $200 million annually, and they know that this announcement will now bring in a flurry of bidders for the casinos. The law will allow for casinos in Wyandotte and Ford counties, and they can also build in the south central and southeastern areas of the state.
