Slot Machine Legislation Hold UpThe legislature would like to pass a slot machine bill that would allow the machines to be played at the state’s two racetracks. However, the bill goes from House to Senate to House, etc. with several factors holding up its approval. The Senate and the House cannot seem to agree on the slot machine licensing fee, the number of slot machines, or the tax rate. The slot machines would be a welcome relief to the state government, for if they are approved, they would not have to increase taxes in the state. Senator Tim Lanane said that he is for the slot machines, but he has to make sure that his county gets what is best for them. He wants to ensure that there is economic and job development before he approves the new bill. The bill has gone to committee now, as the House approved a bill and sent it to the Senate, who then made changes and sent it back to the House. The House sent it to committee who cut the number of slot machines from 2,500 to 1,500 and increased the licensing fee from $100 million to $400 million. One legislator, Senator Luke Kenley, said that he was in favor of auctioning off the slot machine licenses if the tracks could not come up with the $400 million needed to gain the slot machines. Other Senators say that they could end up losing money on the deal. They cite the one auction for $518 million that seemed successful, but the deal is in litigation and the state has not seen the money.
