No Slot Machines YetThe Alabama House decided to sit on a bill that would have legalized high stakes electronic bingo games at dog tracks in Birmingham and Mobile. The bill went to the House Tuesday afternoon, and was immediately delayed. Rep. Marcel Black asked for the delay saying that he felt House members needed more time to discuss whether or not the games should be legalized. Another supporter said that there just weren’t enough votes to pass the bill, so it was better to carry it over until next time to give it a chance to gain some momentum. The bill would allow slot machine type bingo games to go into the dog tracks, and in return 20% of that gross revenue would go to Alabama’s Medicaid program. It would also clearly state that Class III slot machines would not be allowed in the state, so that years from now no one could try and expand gambling to include those types of slot machines. It would also make the slot machine type games that have been appearing in small venues across the state illegal. However, the governor said that he felt the bill goes directly against an Alabama Supreme Court ruling that says that previous incarnations of the electronic game were already found to be illegal. Governor Bob Riley said that by allowing these games to come in that slot machines would soon follow, and that was not an element he wanted in his state.
