Passamaquoddy Tribe Gets ApprovalThe Passamaquoddy Tribe must be so excited; they have finally gotten approval from the House to install slot machines at their harness racing track in eastern Maine. The tribe has been trying for years to gain approval, only to be shut down year after year. One year they watched themselves be turned down only to see slot machines approved in Bangor at Hollywood Slots. The bill must now go to the Senate, where even if it fails it should end up in front of Maine’s voters next November. This is the farthest the tribe has ever gotten in their quest for the slot machines. Lawmakers like the fact that the slot machines will be in Washington County, the poorest county in the state. It would bring in money and jobs for the area, and they are needed badly. Now with Domtar Inc. planning on shutting down their paper machine at their mill in Baileyville, they will lose about another 100 jobs in the area. However, opponents say the slot machine bill is flawed at best. They say that it needs a local referendum provision, and it does not have a business plan to even see if slot machines or a racino are viable in that area. Of course, Governor John Baldacci’s threat still hangs in the air, he has said that he is planning on vetoing the bill if it ends up in front of him. He says that Maine does not need any more slot machines, although he is letting the Bangor complex bring in more.
