Penobscot Nation Wants Slot MachinesThe Penobscot Nation currently has a bill in the Maine House of Representatives that would enable the tribe to add slot machines to Indian Island. They already have what used to be a very successful bingo operation there, but they say that they have been drastically hurt by the state allowing slot machines to come to Bangor. The people of Bangor voted to allow slot machines at Hollywood Slots in Bangor, and since then the tribe has said that their revenue from their bingo operations has dropped. They say that without slot machines of their own, they cannot compete with the casino. They say they want to run about 400 slot machines which would allow them to improve the tribe’s health care and public safety. They have owned and operated high stakes bingo for the last 30 years, and the revenue that comes from the games is what enables the tribe to support itself. They claim that now they need slot machines to continue supporting themselves. They said that with so many people going to the casino to play the slot machines instead of bingo, they have lost a lot of money. They say that they used to bring in more than $150,000 annually to the tribe from the bingo games. Now with the slot machine competition, they are bringing in less than $4,000. They stand a good chance of winning, since the House voted to allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe to bring in slot machines at their harness track in the eastern part of the state.
