Petten Running LotteryEd Van Petten is the current Executive Director of the Kansas Lottery. But Petten has his work cut out for him. In a job fraught with corruption, Petten has already stood out as a blessing to the lottery. Petten is not a gambler, which is a really good thing, because it would be best to have someone running it that won’t try to rig it or take money from it to support a gambling habit, which has happened in the past. But in addition to running the normal lottery, Petten must now gear up for the new slot machines that will be at the racetracks as well. Just a few short years ago, seven to be precise, the agency was an absolute mess. The director was forced out – understandably so. The lottery information resource manager stole $63,000 from the lottery, pornographic material was found on office computers, and inappropriate office behavior was cited. When Petten signed on for the job, only one Senator voted against him and that was Anthony Hensley – who has since said that he is completely convinced now that he can do the job. Petten made sure that the lottery got its re-authorization, but not only that, he got it for another 15 years. Many think his experience as a prosecutor is what makes him so good for the job because he is tough. But with an extension of 15 years, you see that Kansas lawmakers have as much faith in him as Hensley does.
