Seneca Nation Casino

The Seneca Nation Casino has come under fire recently for statements that they have made regarding what it would do for their town of residence, as well as the fact that they are living under different regulations than the other businesses in the town.

The casino claimed that it would bring in a large chunk of revenue for the town, in addition to revitalizing the town and its businesses. However, residents call foul, as their businesses are actually doing worse since the casino came in than they were doing before. They say that people want to stay in the casino instead of leaving the premises to shop or eat outside of it. They say that the casino offers too many choices from retail to restaurants, and the town cannot compete.

They are also angry that the casino, because it is owned by the Seneca Nation tribe that they do not have to follow the same rules and regulations that the local businesses do. They are not subject to the same taxes, 8%, that the other businesses have to pay, nor do they have to abide by the smoking ban.

Residents point out that casinos have been in operation for years across the Niagara River, and they have done a lot for the places where they are located. Not only do they contribute to the rebuilding of the towns where they are located, but they have shown population increases and are experiencing a “booming economy.” In their town there are no jobs and their young people are leaving as soon as they can. They say something has to change in order for them to survive.
