It seems that whenever government gets involved in something it will invariably end up badly or at least messed up. Sometimes the government is truly trying to do the right thing, but somehow that just doesn’t seem to matter. What happens is that government ends up getting things so discombobulated that by the time there is an answer to a problem, there isn’t a problem any more, or it has morphed into something completely different.

Government should try to give structure to a society and then take a hands off approach. However, when you look at a place like Macau, you see that this is definitely not what happened there. Back in 1999, the new chief executive Edmund Ho Hau-wah freed the gambling market from the restrictions that it had on competition, it opened the market that had made one man very rich and opened it to the world.

This made the country more profitable for everyone, and allowed for more growth and change than it would have ever accomplished without it. But that does not mean that there are not problems in Macau either. There are social issues that are growing daily, the worst being the development of an underclass that cannot afford to survive in the society that had been created by the changes. However, Macau has the money to care for these changes.

Ho tried to create a structure for the casino world, and it would have worked if he had kept his nose out of it. However, he allowed one slot machine casino license to be split, and then they all got the right to split as well. So now you have more slot machines and casinos than the market can bear. But now he is keeping hands off, but now it is too late.
