How Much Goes to State?Indiana’s lawmakers say that they want to know exactly how much money will be coming to the state before they sign off on any slot machines at horse tracks. They have been hearing from riverboat casino owners as well as the track owners, as to who is supposed to get what. The track owners keep saying that the stakes are too high, and the riverboat owners say they want higher fees because the competition from the slot machines at the tracks will be incredibly destructive to their livelihood. The legislature wants to know how much they can count on as well. The bill would allow for 3,000 slot machines to come into the tracks, with it being split evenly between them. However, the tracks must pay the state a $400 million licensing fee to operate the slot machines. The tracks say that PA only charges $50 million and people thought that was too high. They say that they will pay $125 million for the slot machines, but they want more machines for that. But while the tracks are arguing about how much they won’t pay, Belterra Casino is offering to pay the $500 million if they give them the slot machine license instead. That got lawmakers thinking that perhaps they should auction off the slot machine license instead. They think that would bring in even more money for them. Meanwhile, the church leaders are trying to veto the slot machine expansion altogether as they don’t think that lawmakers are looking at the big picture. But the government says that without slot machines at the tracks, or some other kind of gambling expansion, the budget will not get met.
