Tracks Making Changes without FundsMaryland’s horse racing tracks had asked the General Assembly to please either legalize slot machines at the tracks, or give them a subsidy of $30 million to assist them in their fight to keep the tracks alive. They said that with the slot machines they could continue the fight on their own, but without them they would need help. The legislature closed down however, without giving the tracks any funding, and not legalizing slot machines. The tracks say that since they were not given anything that they asked for, they would have to start looking at making some changes to their racing seasons as they could not afford to continue functioning the way they have. The tracks are now talking about cutting down from 184 days of live racing, down to 140 days. This way they say they can increase purse levels because they won’t be offering them as often. They also say that they will have to cancel key racing events as they take too much funding to put on. The Maryland Jockey Club has already cancelled the $500,000 Pimlico Special Handicap, which is one of Maryland’s biggest racing events. However,
the tracks say that these changes are just the beginning. They
claim that without slot machines or funding, the changes would
have to become more drastic, until finally they just start
closing their doors one by one.
