Tribe Chooses Fish over Slot MachinesThe Shoshone and Northern Paiute Indians have done something many other tribes have not, and that is forego the slot machines and work on the land instead. It’s not that they can’t, they are choosing not to because of location and the knowledge that has been handed down from generation to generation. The tribe has its own lake instead of its own casino – Lake Billy Shaw was built just nine years ago, and it is a fly-fishing only, catch and release lake. The lake is full of five pound trophy rainbow trout, and anyone would give their eyeteeth to catch one of those – and that is just what the tribe is counting on. Some choose to gamble on the slot machines, they are choosing to gamble on nature. The lake is surrounded by birds, and trees, and now anglers from California, Washington, and Arizona, as well as more local areas. As the stories get spread about the 28 inch long trout that one fisherman caught, everyone wants to have a go at it as well. Many tribes have chosen to go with slot machines and casinos, for everyone knows that the tribes desperately need ways to support themselves. Many of our American Indian tribal members are some of the poorest people in the land, their land, and yet they are constantly struggling to find a way to survive. It seems this tribe may have strayed from the usual ways, but it seems to be working out very well for them.
