West Virginia Debate Gets Heated

The debate over table games at Shepherd University was a great chance for residents to hear both sides of the issues. There were community leaders there representing both sides of the table games issue, and residents got an earful.

Delegate John Doyle, a Democrat from Jefferson, and Douglas Fraim, a local pastor, were on the con side, and Walter Pellish and Alan Sturm came from the pro side. Doyle and Fraim say that there are financial and moral reasons why the games should not join slot machines at the tracks, while Pellish and Sturm said that there is no reason for them not to be legalized as they, and their schools, need the money more than residents could imagine.

Each group was allowed to make statements with facts supporting their points, and once each group was finished, they were allowed to ask questions of themselves. The biggest question was why Doyle originally supported the bill and now is lobbying against it.

Doyle said that he had expressed his concerns on the floor, and had said at that time that he was going to take it to the people and have them hear his concerns. Pellish then went one step further in saying that the quality of education, and our lives, basically depended on the legalization of the table games.

He cited the example of a man having a stroke, and then he said that the quality of the education of that EMT that came to take care of him would decide whether or not that man lived or died. He said that without the legalization of table games, education would not improve, and that basically this man would die. The idea elicited several groans from the audience, as everyone knew he was more than stretching the truth with that one.
