West Virginia Table Games SagaWith Special Election Day rapidly approaching for two of the counties in West Virginia, some people are still confused as to why only two of the counties will be offering elections, while the other two have to wait. Granted, Hancock will only be a couple weeks behind them, having their election on June 30th, but Kanawha’s election isn’t happening until August. The problem was an advertising one. The law states that all elections must be advertised for at least 30 days before they can be held. Therefore, all four counties had to get their legal ads in the newspapers by a specific deadline, and only two of them did. They hit all of the major outlets – newspapers, television, billboards – in order to get their message out. However, Hancock and Kanawha missed their deadlines, so they had to wait. Plus, Kanawha has an additional 90 day deadline, so they have to wait until August to have their election. Initially, gambling supporters said it didn’t matter, that it was just a technicality since there had already been enough advertising about the elections. However, state law is state law, and that little technicality is breaking that law. Opponents say that they were just waiting for them to have the election so that they could have the results thrown out because it was an illegal election.
