More Slot Machines ComingThe B.C. Lotteries Corporation is trying to help out flagging sales in their bingo halls by adding in slot machines. They assume that by bringing in slot machines that more people will come play as they are considerably more exciting, and pay better than bingo machines do. As more cities agree to add in the slot machines into the bingo halls, the country could be looking at a major gambling expansion, however, and many are not very excited about that possibility. The new “community gaming centers” are simply slot machine casinos coming under a less scary name, some say, when really they should be called casinos. Many of the neighboring towns have already agreed to bring in the slot machines – and Surrey is only the latest in a long line to consider it. Mission was the first one to bring in the slot machines – they added 75. Langley Township and Abbotsford have also agreed to the slot machines and they will be opening with them in summer and fall of this year respectively. The lottery says that they are in talks with Chilliwack and Maple Ridge to bring slot machines in there as well. Those opposed to the gambling expansion say that these “mini casinos” are simply the same as the big ones only without the table games. They argue that it is an expansion that they can ill afford.
