Rendell Fearful of Win

Governor Rendell had reported his slot machine wins on his federal income tax forms, but had forgotten to report them on his 2008 Statement of Financial Interest, a public document filed with the state Ethics Commission last week. Well, don’t you know but the press jumped all over it saying that he had tried to hide the wins, but in reality he had already reported them.

Rendell’s staff had prepared the latter document and had omitted the slot machine wins by mistake. Once they realized what they had done they corrected the error and submitted the amended document. However, this was not what was concerning Rendell.

Rendell was actually worried about the slot machine win itself. He said that he was playing the slot machines at Harrah’s Chester Casino & Racetrack after giving a speech for the NAACP when he won. He won around $2,000 but was afraid that it would look bad that he had won. He said that his first thought was that the press was going to jump all over it saying that the casino had “let” him win, or that a favor of some kind had been performed for him so that he would win.

He wanted to be very clear that in no way was this what had happened. He was simply playing the slot machines just like everyone else when he won. He was excite to have won at the slot machines, but at the same time didn’t want it to look like it was rigged. He thought that he would be in some sort of trouble for winning and that it was more of a case of panic than elation.

He thought he had won $200 and when he realized that it was $2,000 he really got worried. He gave the two troopers that are on his security detail $100 each in gift certificates to the casino’s steakhouse and then gave the rest to his wife who took it to pay the taxes.
