Illegal Slot MachinesA Maryland man got probation on Friday for owning and running illegal slot machines. It came as no surprise that he pled guilty for many thought that he would as the case was fairly cut and dry. William Barton of Colora admitted in court that he had been running illegal slot machines. The Cecil County man knew that the slot machines that he was running were illegal, but continued to run them anyway. Barton was running them out of his restaurant, and police got a tip about the illegal slot machines and went to investigate. Barton was running eight illegal slot machines when police arrived and discovered that he was indeed running them in the restaurant. They had done their research and knew that the slot machines were there, and they also knew that he was paying out the machines which is illegal in the state of Maryland. Barton’s slot machines were designed for entertainment purposes only, but that is not what he was using them for. In exchange for pleading guilty to the illegal slot machines, police dropped 16 gambling related counts as they related to the case. Barton also got one year of probation for having the illegal slot machines. If he meets all of the conditions of his probation, the conviction won’t show on his record. This is called a probation before judgment. The March raid of the restaurant, Jumbo Jimmy’s on Route 222, was held in conjunction with the sheriffs and the police departments.
