Races are Approved to be Cut

You are seeing it across the nation. Those states that allow slot machines at their tracks are doing very well for themselves and those that are not allowing slot machines are folding or struggling under the pressure to keep up. It would seem that if slot machines were allowed at one track that they should be allowed at all of them, for they give an unfair advantage to those that have them over those that do not.

Churchill Downs is one of those tracks that have long claimed that they needed slot machines to keep their doors open, and it would seem that they really were not kidding when they said that. The track has announced that they have gotten approval to cut both their racing days and the amount of their purses for their spring meet.

The track has long said that without slot machines they could not continue to run at full function, and thus would have to make some changes. They have recently gotten the approval from the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission to cut seven days of racing. They said that without slot machines they could not offer higher purses, which kept horses out of their races.

The state’s tracks have long asked for slot machines to be considered at the tracks, but so far they have not been successful in their appeals. Opponents say that if people aren’t going to the tracks then they should just let them close – not give them slot machines to keep open a dying industry. Supporters argue that they would then be looking at thousands of people out of work – which in this economy should be avoided at all costs.
