Australia Giving Away Slot Machines for More Tax

Australia has decided that they are going to allow more slot machines to come in as long as they pay higher taxes. They have informed Crown Ltd., their largest casino owner, that if they want to bring in more slot machines they can, but they have to pay more in tax with the increase coming over the next six years.

They are going to increase their tax by 1.72% each year for six years an in exchange they are allowed to bring in more slot machines for more gambling. Residents are upset by this move as they thought that the government of Australia was just as concerned as they were about the increase in the number of slot machine and poker addicts that they already have.

Many have been working, somewhat successfully to remove some of the slot machines that are currently in the country. Now that the government is allowing more to come in though, this is going to make it very difficult for them to keep removing them. They feel as though the government is working against them instead of with them at this point.

The government says that they need the additional revenue, since they are in such a tough economy – but residents say that the money that comes in comes at too high of a price. They say that they are setting their residents up for failure as the money for these new slot machines will inevitably come out of their pockets.

The government says that not only do they need the money, but they argue that there are plenty within the country asking for more slot machines so they have to listen to their constituents.
