Don’t Mess with Las Vegas

It takes a certain kind of idiocy to think that you can get away with selling fake slot machines to places like Las Vegas. You might get away with it in say some backwater down where people have never seen one before, but to go to an area where not only are there more slot machines than cars is not the smartest thing anyone has ever done.

But two men decided that this was exactly what they were going to do, and they got caught. Cuban national Rodolfo Rodriguez Cabrera and Henry Mantilla of Cape Coral, Florida both pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to produce and sell counterfeit International Game Technology slot machines and computer programs. Cabrera was arrested June 8^th of last year in Riga, Latvia and managed to become the first person to be extradited from Latvia to the US under their new extradition treaty. Both men were indicted by a federal grand jury in Las Vegas this past April.

Both of them are facing a max of five years in prison, each, for their crime as well as a $250,000 fine. They are scheduled to be sentenced at a later date. They were also indicted on one count of conspiracy and two counts of trafficking in counterfeit labels. They were also accused of criminal copyright infringement. The men are being prosecuted by Thomas S. Dougherty of the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime Intellectual Property Section as well as Assistant United States Attorney Michael Chu of Nevada.
