Florida’s Anti-Slot Machiners

The Christian Coalition of Florida has posted on its web site: “Gambling has been demonstrated to be destructive to individual lives, families, businesses and society as a whole. Gambling preys upon our youth, the elderly, minorities and those with less education. Millions of Americans are problem or pathological gamblers, producing huge financial and social costs. Whether a lottery, video gambling or any other form of gambling, the Christian Coalition of Florida is unwilling to risk the life of one individual or the destruction of one family.”

Those are some strong statements, and they have the resources on their web site to back them up. They tried and failed to stop the slot machines coming in to the racinos in Broward County, and are now trying to keep a limit on the number of the Class III slot machines that are now allowed in the state.

Their site says that they are “protecting from gambling,” and they are using all of their manpower to do so. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on what side of the slot machine issue you are on, they are not fairing too well. With a new governor poised to come in that will have accepted money for his campaign from those with slot machine gambling interests (for both candidates have), their jobs are about to get a whole lot harder.

They were able to successfully get Miami-Dade to not legalize the slot machines, but with another referendum on its way to the county to legalize the slot machines, their fight is starting all over again.
