Slot Machines in B.C.?

A forum was held the other night in Mission to determine if slot machines should be allowed into their town. The Boardwalk Gaming Center is trying to bring in 50 slot machines and the town is split on what they should do. Many feel that the charities need the money that could come from slot machine revenue, but others say that the price you would pay for those machines is just too high.

The slot machines are currently illegal in Mission, but the council is considering amending a bylaw to allow them, and hence the meeting to see where residents stood on the issue. Most of those that spoke at the meeting were in favor of bringing in the slot machines, with some opposed. Those that were in favor of the idea said that by bringing slot machines to the town you would also be bringing more jobs to the town, as well as more patrons to the gaming facility which in turn supports local charities and the economy.

One man said that he knew what it was like to try and raise money for charity, and although it wasn’t easy, slot machines were not the answer. Lori Clease, who has worked on fundraising for years said, “These 16 groups aren’t national charities that have resources ... and money to go out to raise money…I know how hard it is to raise money for charity.”

Many said that since people are just getting into busses to go to the United States to play slot machines, why shouldn’t they be here in their own backyard so that their money stays in the town instead of going elsewhere.
