Colorado Slot Machines Need Regulating

The Denver Post has come out with some startling facts recently. They claim that out of the eleven states that allow slot machines and commercial gambling, Colorado assigns the fewest regulators per slot machine than any other state. Each of the five Division of Gaming regulators are responsible for 3,400 slot machines – with the five of them covering 17,000 slot machines in all. Most states have much lower ratios, with one regulator to every 1,500 slot machines.

Nevada has 182 slot machine regulators. They also have more slot machines than Colorado with them coming in at over 207,000 devices. However, their ratio is 1,140 slot machines per regulator. This is obviously more manageable than Colorado has been looking at, and it is showing. The Colorado Division of Gaming recently found that 14 of the state’s 46 casinos had defective or illegal slot machines. Many times the regulators had asked the casinos to remove the slot machines, but they remained on the floor for over two years.

The state ended up fining five casinos over $111,000 for slot machine violations, and nine more casinos face fines this month as well. Ron Kammerzell, Division Director, thinks that they have the right number of regulators per slot machine. He says, "We're in a better position today than we've ever been. I see these problems that we're experiencing today diminishing over the next couple of months. We've sent a message to the industry -- we're not going to tolerate this."
