Council Approves Slot Machines

There were three Buffalo Common Council members who disagreed with the approval of the land sale to Seneca Gaming Corporation. The company wants to bring in a slot machine casino, and the town is not happy about what they feel slot machines will do to the area. The group of three however was outvoted by six other members who wanted to see the slot machines roll in.

Joseph Golombek, Jr., Michael Kearns, and Michael LoCurto voted against all four parts of the Fulton Street Resolution to bring in a slot machine casino. They also said that the refused to approve an environmental impact study that had no meaning whatsoever. They did not feel that the slot machines and the slot machine casino would be of any benefit to the city, nor would the sale of the property.

Only two of the council members that voted to approve the slot machine casino actually spoke, one was Majority Leader Dominic Bonifacio, who said that the mayor’s office was handling all of the slot machine casino’s dealings, and that they were only brought in on the part of the deal that had to do with the sale of the land to the slot machine casino. He said he felt a contract was better than no contract at all. The other speaker, Brian Davis, spoke for the first time during this process, and after speaking in regards to the community development and how he felt this casino would help the town, he voted in favor of both the slot machine casino and the environmental study.

Antoine Thompson, David Franczyk, Richard Fontana, and Bonnie Russell did not comment on the slot machine casino, or the impact study. The four simply voted yes to approve the sale.
