Ohio Says Yes to Dems, No to Slot MachinesOhio voters have done a turnaround this election, for it was them that decided to approve President Bush into office last term, and this time around they went Democratic instead. They voted the Republicans out of many key seats, with US Rep Ted Strickland becoming the first Democratic Governor in over a decade. The voters also rejected a racetrack supported proposal that would have allowed racetracks to put slot machines on the premises. The Learn and Earn slot machine initiative was soundly defeated much to the surprise of many. It was a widely held belief that the slot machines would be approved, as 30% of the revenue would be going towards scholarships for higher education. Many approved the slot machine measure as they saw it as a way to combat the high price of a college education for instate students at Ohio colleges and universities. Others
thought for sure it would be defeated as they felt the amount of
money coming in that was not earmarked for the scholarship fund
was just too high. They felt if it was truly an “education
initiative” then the 30% that had been approved would have been
higher. They also felt that the social ills that come with
approving slot machines were not worth the price of legalizing
the machines. They cite higher crime rates, gambling addictions,
among others as reason enough not to approve the slot machine
initiative.
