Florida Tribe Getting Slot Machines

The US Department of the Interior may have to step in to make it so, but the Seminole Indians will be getting the Class III slot machines they have been asking for. They have been trying to reach an agreement with Governor Bush for years to bring in slot machines, but he has not been able to. The tribe already has Class II slot machines, where players can play against each other, but the Class III slot machines would mean much higher stakes.

Now that Broward County has approved Class III slot machines, the state can’t really say no. Under federal law, the tribe has the right to have the same kind of gaming and same class of slot machines as is offered anywhere else in the state. The state cannot keep them from getting them, although they can hold up the process which is what Governor Bush has been doing. He may be holding up the process, but unless he reaches an agreement with the tribe, they will get the slot machines and the state won’t get anything.

If the Interior steps in, which they have already said they would, they will broker the deal for the Indians to get the slot machines. Then if they have brokered the deal, and the state has not, the state will not get any of the slot machine revenue. The agency has already said that they are prepared to make a ruling by the end of November if the state has not signed a slot machine compact with the Seminoles by then.
