Griffiths Says No to Slot MachinesDue to new classifications in the Gambling Act, fruit slot machines are now considered Category D machines, which means they can be put in arcades next to other amusement games and children can play them. The machines take 10p stakes and pay out up to £5, which makes the country on their way to creating a whole generation of slot machine addicts. Professor Mark Griffith has done quite a bit of research on the topic; he is Europe’s only gambling professor. He says that the ministers need to take a better look at the law, for they don’t really want their children playing slot machines. He said, "In the past ten years, fruit machines have been the predominant form of gambling by pathological gamblers treated in self-help groups and treatment centers across Europe." Griffiths submitted a paper to the Culture Department to let them know that most gambling addictions start on low stakes slot machines. He said that one in 25 juvenile crimes is “slot machine related” and blames the slot machines for "delinquency, alcohol and substance abuse, poor school performance, theft and truancy." He said that if you allow these slot machines to go unfettered you are going to create a whole generation of children addicted to slot machines, as they will be playing them like they would any other game. IT has been shown that even though the machines only take 10p stakes, the people playing them are paying out up to £3 a minute.
