Slot Machines are Ringing at Gulfstream

This Wednesday, slot machine fans will finally get their chance to play the machines at the Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino. It is the first of the four Broward County locations to open with their Class III slot machine license, and locals cannot wait to get in the doors to try them. ''After months of anticipation it's come to an end. People get the chance to play the first real slots in Florida,'' Paul Micucci, the park's president said tonight.

The slot machine casino will have a “soft opening” on Wednesday to make sure that all glitches are fixed, then will be closed on Thursday to correct anything and get ready for its official opening on Friday. ''Once everyone hears about us, they'll come back many, many times,'' Micucci said.

The state regulators were there on Monday and approved the slot machine casino’s opening for Wednesday after running several on-site tests. There will be an invitation only gala Thursday night, and then all 516 slot machines will be open to the general public the next day. Eventually the track is planning on having the maximum number of slot machines that are allowed by Florida law, which would be 1,500.

The other locations are planning on opening as soon as they can, with Mardi Gras in Hallandale Beach being next on the list. They will open with 1,147 slot machines sometime in the beginning of December. Dania Jai Alai is planning on opening in 2008 with 1,500 slot machines as well as poker tables, restaurants, a nightclub, and bars.
