Gulfstream Slot Machines Open

Today was officially the first day for Class III slot machines to start operating in Florida. Since the approval of the legalization of slot machines in Broward County, residents have been waiting to catch a glimpse of the machines and they finally got their chance. The Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino was the first to have their slot machines up and running.

''You may look inside and see slot machines,'' said State Sen. Steve Geller, a longtime gambling-expansion advocate. “I see machines generating revenue.''

Half of the slot machine revenue will go to benefit education in Florida, with Broward County, Hallandale Beach, Pompano Beach, and Dania Beach each receiving a portion of the profits. Waiting for the slot machine casino to open was a line of more than 200 people waiting to get in to play the slot machines; some had been there for hours.

Hallandale Beach Mayor Joy Cooper was the first to play the slot machines, putting a dollar into the “Super Jackpot” slot machine. She was joined by Vice Mayor Bill Julian and they pushed the button in unison. ''It's really great to see people here, the excitement and the people coming to the city,'' Cooper said.

Within the first few minutes after the opening, most of the 516 slot machines had people at them playing, and no one could be happier than Paul Micucci, the park’s president. ''We're breathing a sigh of relief,'' said Micucci. “I think it's great. We didn't do a lot of advertising; we just wanted to open it. The place is full.''
