Slot Machines Have Effect on HorsesThe horsemen are probably the only ones in Florida not completely happy about the slot machines up and running at Gulfstream Park. They are excited at the slot machine revenue that is going to help the industry, but they have concerns as well. The purses at Gulfstream have been lower than they should be for some time now, and the slot machine revenue is going to lift those numbers. The industry thinks that it is possible for the purses to double by 2008 because of the slot machines, there are still many unanswered questions regarding thoroughbred racing as a whole in South Florida. "Obviously, we're all very hopeful about what [slot machines mean] for the industry and purses at Gulfstream," said Eddie Plesa Jr., a trainer based at Calder Race Course in Miami Gardens. "But how this is going to play out over the long term? I don't think anybody really knows." With the slot machines that Gulfstream currently has, experts are planning on purses going up $80,000-$100,000 a day. Once they install all 1,500 slot machines that they are planning on bringing in, experts say they could be looking at daily purses closer to $500,000. However, none of that money will go to Calder Race Course, and with Gulfstream only operating a 90-day race meet – the horse racers are still looking at smaller purses the rest of the year even though there are millions still coming in from the slot machines.
