Massachusetts Governor Considering Adding Slot MachinesThe new Governor-elect of Massachusetts is considering legalizing slot machines – which is a far cry from the outgoing governor’s point of view. The Governor has been dead set against bringing in the slot machines, much to many residents’ dismay. However, with Patrick now at the helm, a slot machine dream could very much become a reality. Many gambling companies are now looking at Massachusetts another way, and preparing to renew previous efforts to get slot machines legalized. The state’s racetracks have been pushing for the slot machines for years, as they have been having revenue problems for a long time now. They say that if they were allowed to bring in slot machines they would be able to stay open and keep thousands of jobs in the state. Patrick is also aware of the number of gamblers from Massachusetts that go across state lines to play at the Foxwoods casino, and what that additional slot machine revenue could do for the state. The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is also considering bringing in slot machines, as is their right under federal law. If the state decides to bring in Class III Vegas type slot machines, then they will be allowed them as well. Patrick has stated that he has spent a lot of time with those opposed to slot machines, and would now like to hear the other side of the story. He has said that he hopes to have a decision as to whether or not he will pursue legalizing the slot machines by April of next year.
