Maryland Feeling Pressure of PA Slot Machines

The racetracks in Maryland need slot machine to continue running, or they know that they will have to close their doors. With Pennsylvania approving slot machines at 14 different locations across the state, they say why would people come to play at their racetracks, when they can bet on the horses and play slot machines across the border. They know that residents of the state are going to start going to PA to play, just because of the slot machines.

The Maryland Jockey Club says they have “done everything [they] can, with the tools [they] have, to make [their] business competitive with [their] neighbors,” but they have no where else to turn. Their old governor tried for four years to get slot machines approved, but was unsuccessful.

The new governor has said that he will try to get slot machines at the racetracks as well, but many think that it will not be a high priority for him. Now that he has been informed of the $5 billion budget deficit he will face as Governor, some say that he might put it a little higher on his to do list. After all, slot machines might be good for the horse racing industry, but they will also do wonders for the government’s bottom line as well.

Crickett Goodall, Executive Director of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, said that the industry was "very hopeful four years ago when Gov. Ehrlich took office." However, since the governor was not successful in bringing in slot machines, many were feeling discouraged. Now with the new governor saying that he might have to get involved in order to get the slot machines approved, many are starting to feel hopeful again. Especially since the new governor is a Democrat and so is the majority of the legislature. "I think a lot of the legislators would agree with him. They would like to get the issue done and off their plate fairly soon," Goodall said.
