Maryland Wants to Legalize Slot Machines

Governor-elect Martin O’Malley is planning on pushing the state of Maryland’s legislature when they reconvene in January to legalize slot machines at their racetracks. He says that without the slot machines there is a good chance that they will lose the horse racing industry in the state, as well as thousands and thousands of jobs. His predecessor, Governor Ehrlich, spent four years trying to legalize the slot machines, but as a Republican he had a hard time. With O’Malley being a Democrat, many think he may have an easier time of passing a slots bill than anyone else.

Some of the incoming delegates are opposed to slot machines, and some are not. Shane Prendergrass said that she had previously voted against the slots bill, but could be persuaded to vote for legalization of slot machines if it were good for her constituents. Frank Turner said that Ehrlich kept saying that without slot machines the horse racing industry would fail, and he hasn’t seen that happen. He said since so many don’t want the slot machines in their backyards, it is going to be tough to get a “workable slots formula.”

Barbara Frush said she did not have any problems personally with slot machines, but would not vote for them because of the effect on the surrounding communities. She says they don’t want the slot machines and all that comes with them, and she answers to them. James Rosapepe said he would vote for the slot machines if there were a limit to the number that were allowed. James Robey said he thinks slot machines will preserve the horse industry and would vote for them if “enough money was set aside to improve infrastructure around Laurel Park.”
