$70 Million for No Frills Slot Machine Parlor

Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania is known for many things, it is home of King’s College, a small catholic college as well as Wilkes College, their rivals. It is home to some of the most breathtaking views as it is settled in the middle of a valley in eastern Pennsylvania – and moments away are ski trails and mountains that are simply gorgeous to look at. But now Wilkes-Barre is going to be known for something else – the first slot machine casino to be open in Pennsylvania.

More than two years after PA approved slot machines in the state, the first casino is finally open. The Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs is the first to open, and their owners – the Mohegan Indian tribe of Connecticut – spent more than $70 million to bring a no-frills slot machine parlor that has two gambling floors and almost 1,100 slot machines.

"I think everybody is a little nervous but also very excited," said Robert Soper, Mohegan Sun's CEO. "It was never our goal - and frankly it was never that important to us - to open first, but certainly we are going to celebrate the fact."

Casino and slot machine opponents are still not happy at the thought of the casinos being open, and the anti-gambling group CasinoFreePa just asked state Attorney General Tom Corbett to keep the slot machine casinos from opening until they can prove that the slot machines comply with fraud and consumer protection laws. They say that the amount of negative consequences that come from slot machines can not be ignored. Dianne Berlin says, "I have story after story after story of real people who would not have done the things they did, but gambling became very convenient for them," she said. "Convenience gambling is the worst gambling."
