No Slots for ME! Still Fighting Slot MachinesEven though Hollywood Slots in Bangor, Maine has actually had a stellar year, in terms of slot machine revenue and in low crime, there are still those that don’t want the slot machines in Maine. The group No Slots for ME! group is still working on getting the residents of Maine to ban slot machines completely. Three years ago, voters decided to approve slot machines in Maine at commercial horse racing tracks. At that time the group said that there would be increased crime, suicides, and problem gamblers if the machines were allowed. This however, has not turned out to be the case. In fact, although the police have been called out to the casino, it has been for minor traffic violations and accidents, not for crime. Also, the gambling hotline has said that they have not seen an increase in calls either. Those opposed to the slot machines say that is only because they are still in their first year, and that by allowing them at the tracks eventually slot machines will spread across Maine and bring their predictions to pass. Douglas Muir, a spokesman for the group, said, "Slot machines produce gambling addiction approximately three times faster than horse racing or the lottery so it is a more dangerous or more risky form of gambling." The group is not giving up, and is collecting signatures to get it on the ballot; they think that they stand a real chance at getting the slot machines banned from the state.
