Ontario Casinos Responsible for Slot Machine Addicts

The Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre has released a report naming the Ontario Government themselves as well as the slot machine casinos responsible for the country’s gambling addiction problem. The Canadian government spends more than $35 million a year on gambling prevention, treatment and research, to try and help and prevent slot machine and gambling addictions. With these new conclusions, the center has said that the slot machine casinos have the same responsibility to their customers as bar owners do to drinkers.

There are ten full slot machine casinos as well as seventeen racetracks which house slot machine rooms, and they all have the same legal responsibility. The report says that since the gambling halls and slot machine casinos gather information regarding who plays, they can tell various things about each player. If they can track them for comps to give each player, then they can track them to find out who is spending more than they should be.

The report says that those people who are playing thousands of dollars at the slot machines and gambling tables are being rewarded for spending so much money, instead of being helped with their gambling addiction. There is already a voluntary program that Canadians can sign up for that bans patrons from the slot machine casinos, and if they sign up at one establishment, they will be banned from all of them. This is another attempt by the government to try and assist those with a slot machine or gambling problem.

The report does not talk about whether or not the courts could find the government liable for the financial losses then suffered by the slot machine players, instead leaves it up to the courts to decide where those boundaries lie.
