PA Slot Machines Making Big MoneyWith the anticipation of the opening of the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, many were wondering what kind of slot machine revenue they would be looking at. There were estimates, but no one could have been prepared for how well the casino’s slot machines actually did. The Mohegan Sun is one of seven horse tracks that are going to be allowed slot machines, and with their opening they have just become the only place in Pennsylvania to play the slot machines. The next one doesn’t open until next month when Philadelphia Park in Bensalem turns on their slot machines. So with no competition, the casino seems to be doing very well, in fact better than anyone could have predicted. More than 14,000 people entered the slot machine casino that first day, with over 1,800 of them in the first hour alone. With only 1,100 slot machines to go around, it is no wonder that people were waiting in line to play them. The state is very happy with the amount of slot machine revenue they see coming in, as it is already earmarked for property and wage taxes, as well as the funding of a rent-rebate program for senior citizens. The company is not planning on stopping with the slot machine casino it currently has. They already have a $150 million expansion that they are planning to start early next year, that will open in 2008 and have up to an additional 3,000 slot machines.
