Prop B Defeated, No Slot MachinesIt turned out to be a close race, but those against slot machines won over those that were for them in Guam on Tuesday. There was a difference of less than 4,000 votes between those that were for the slot machines and those that were not, and Attorney Jay Arriola, a counselor for the anti-gambling group Lina’la sin casino said that they thought this was a sign of the character of the people who live on the island. He said, "This was a hard fought campaign…They spent millions literally and they guaranteed it with millions and threw everything at this election that they possibly could, and us with our few volunteers and church people just went out and taught the people about what was really being proposed." The group still has a lawsuit pending against the Guam Election Commission for problems stemming from the processing of the initiative, and they plan on seeing those through although they won. They want to ensure that the next time someone tries to bring slot machines, or anything else they don’t feel is good for the island, onto the ballot, that it will be done in a legal and just manner. "Our position in that case will certainly be to take a step back and look at it; let's evaluate it, and I think we want to make sure the process is disclosed and that a resolution to the failures of that process is achieved," Arriola explained.
